1. Find a clean and static free work environment
This doesn’t mean you have to wear a white space suit looking outfit in a spot free and clean environment like on Willy Wonka. It just means you should NOT be on carpet, and should wear shoes to prevent static electricity from building up. Another great way of protecting your new project would be to wear an anti-static wrist strap. This grounds you to the case of the computer which does a great job of dispersing any static electricity that may build up in the building process.
Some examples of this type of environment could be:

In the garage on the workbench

At the dining room table

On the kitchen counter

At your desk if it’s not on carpet
It is possible to safely build a computer on carpet but I would not recommend it, especially for the first time builder. You just want to be as safe as possible and take as many precautions as you can to prevent damaging your new computer.
