Cyberpower UPS APC Computer Battery Backup with Automatic Voltage Regulator - Uninterruptible Power Supply

This is an absolutely essential item to buy if you're going to invest a lot of money in building a new computer.  I highly advise against simply plugging your computer into a power strip since all that does is prevent surges of power reaching your computer when a battery backup can do so much more.

The leader by far in battery backups is APC.  I own a battery backup made by them and it's saved my computer so many times.  When there are small power glitches that switch off and on the power in a split second there's a chance that it can damage the computer.  In fact, my friend just recently lost all his files because he didn't have a battery backup.  The power went out only for a split second but it was enough to turn off and damage his computer.

Computers have so many electronic components that are extremely sensitive to electricity so any time the computer just shuts off without being shut down properly it can damage the computer, especially in the long run.  Having a battery backup creates an uninterruptible power supply and will keep your computer running in a power outage leaving you enough time to shut it down safely.  APC even has a cable that goes from the battery backup to the computer that tells it to shut down if there's a power outage for a while, so the batteries don't run out all of a sudden.

APC not only has that option, but they also have what's called Automatic Voltage Regulation, or Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR), which regulates the voltage going into the computer.  Power coming into your house or apartment is filled with small and normally undetectable power spikes which can damage a computer over a period of time.  The APC battery backup regulates these small spikes so the computer is getting a consistent level of voltage, saving your computer and files.
